To accomplish this goal, SDN, with its partners and subsidiaries, plans to develop the following: • A Seaport – The core of the SDN project is the development of a full service deep draught port, capable of supporting container, cargo and general navigation ships and offering related facilities, equipment and services for bulk and liquid cargo, containers, transshipment, cargo transfer and hub activities (including fueling and ship repair). • An Industrial Zone – Situated behind the port on approximately 228.75 acres (91.5 ha) and divided into 3 sectors, the area will comprise a modern industrial park with free zone status, and include a light assembly sector, a cement plant and other industry.
• A Housing District – Situated over 250 acres (100 ha), this area will be devoted to various types of structures including residential buildings, a healthcare facility, a schooling complex, a multi-denominational meeting facility, sporting areas, recreational spaces, and a commercial area that will house shopping centers and banks.
• Processing Plants – Facilities that will be used to process fruits and grains (such as flour a flour mill) and industrial crops such as jatropha for agro-business and export. Though the development of the port is not dependent on the development of the industrial zone, the housing district and the processing plants (the Supporting Activities), the potential of the port will be greatly enhanced by those Supporting Activities. To that end, SDN plans the development and operation of both the port (approximately 100 acres (40 ha)) and the Supporting Activities (approximately 500 acres (200 ha)) as part of the broader and coordinated development and operation of an integrated 2250 acre (900 ha) Free Zone under Haiti’s 2002 Law on Free Zones. SDN believes that the operation and development of the Free Zone by a single lead developer will enhance the planning, implementation, integration and ultimate success of the Free Zone as a whole as well as each of its components. The Free Zone has the added advantage of harnessing the skills of the private sector to meet the needs of the various government, political, business and community constituencies in Haiti. The coordinated development of the port, the Supporting Activities and the Free Zone by SDN offers a unique opportunity for business in Haiti to both do well and do good. Read More
